This 8 days Morocco tour from Casablanca is the fastest comfortable way to travel the classic north to south route: land at Mohammed V Airport, and one week later fly out of Marrakech having seen Rabat, Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Fes, the Merzouga dunes, Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley and Ait Ben Haddou.

Unlike the loop tours, this is a one way itinerary, which is exactly what makes 8 days enough: you never drive the same road twice. On the way between Chefchaouen and Fes you stop at Volubilis, the partly excavated Roman city whose mosaics, basilica and triumphal arch have been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. It is one of three World Heritage stops on this route, together with the Fes medina and Ait Ben Haddou.

Day 1: Arrival in Casablanca

Meet your driver at Mohammed V Airport and settle into your hotel. With daylight left, we head to the Hassan II Mosque, built right over the Atlantic, and take a walk along the Corniche. Overnight in Casablanca.

Day 2: Casablanca to Rabat and Chefchaouen

Rabat comes first: the unfinished 12th century Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the ocean facing Kasbah of the Udayas. Then the road winds north into the Rif until the blue houses of Chefchaouen appear stacked against the mountainside. Overnight in Chefchaouen.

Day 3: Chefchaouen to Volubilis and Fes

You get the morning in Chefchaouen while the light is best for photos. In the afternoon, walk among the Roman columns and mosaics of Volubilis before arriving in Fes and checking into your riad. Overnight in Fes.

Day 4: Guided day in the Fes medina

With a licensed local guide you dive into Fes el-Bali: the tanneries viewed from the leather shop terraces, the madrasas, the Royal Palace gates, the Mellah and the artisan quarters where copper, cedar and thread are still worked by hand. Overnight in Fes.

Day 5: Fes to Merzouga and your first Sahara sunset

The longest and most varied day: Ifrane, the cedar forest of Azrou with its Barbary monkeys, the Midelt plateau and the long green ribbon of the Ziz Valley. At Merzouga you trade four wheels for a camel and ride into Erg Chebbi as the dunes turn orange. Overnight in a desert camp.

Day 6: Merzouga to Rissani, Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley

Sunrise from the dunes, then back across the sand for breakfast. You pass the market town of Rissani, stretch your legs between the 300 metre walls of Todra Gorge and follow the palm groves of Tinghir into the Dades Valley. Overnight in Dades Valley.

Day 7: Dades Valley to Ait Ben Haddou and Marrakech

Through the Valley of Roses and the Skoura palm grove to Ouarzazate, then on to Ait Ben Haddou, where you climb the ksar to the old granary at the top for a view over the whole valley. The Tizi n’Tichka pass carries you over the High Atlas to Marrakech by evening. Overnight in Marrakech.

Day 8: Marrakech and departure

If your flight allows, spend the morning around Jemaa el-Fna and the souks. Your driver then drops you at Marrakech Menara Airport, or arranges the run back to Casablanca if you fly out from there. End of your 8 day Morocco tour.

Is 8 days enough for Morocco?

Enough for the essential route, yes. You cover Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Fes, the Sahara, the gorges and Marrakech, each with real time on the ground. What you sacrifice is a rest day, which is why we also offer 9, 10, 12 and 14 day versions of this itinerary.

Where does the tour end, Marrakech or Casablanca?

Your choice. Most travellers fly out of Marrakech, so day 8 ends at Menara Airport. If your return flight leaves from Casablanca, we arrange the transfer back up the highway at a fixed price agreed in advance.

What vehicles do you use for this tour?

Depending on your group size: a Toyota Prado for up to 4 passengers, a Ford Tourneo Custom for up to 7, or a Mercedes Sprinter and Volkswagen Crafter for larger groups up to 17. All are modern, air conditioned and driven by licensed professionals.

How far in advance should we book?

Two weeks is the comfortable minimum for us to hold your dates and help with accommodation suggestions. High season (April, May, October and the year end holidays) fills earlier, so the sooner you write, the more choice you have.

Can the tour start in Tangier instead of Casablanca?

Yes. Travellers arriving by ferry or into Tangier airport start the same route from the north: Tangier, optionally Tetouan, then Chefchaouen on day one. The rest of the itinerary continues unchanged and the price is quoted the same way, fixed in advance.

What should we pack for this route?

Layers are the secret: the same week can give you 28 degree afternoons in the palm valleys and near freezing desert nights in winter. Comfortable walking shoes for the medinas, a warm layer for the camp, a scarf for sun and sand, and modest cover ups for religious sites.
