This 8 days Morocco tour from Marrakech is a private circular route that starts and ends in the Red City, so there is no need for internal flights or long backtracking. In one week you cross the High Atlas, sleep near the Sahara dunes of Merzouga, explore the imperial city of Fes, wander blue Chefchaouen, and return along the Atlantic side through Rabat and Casablanca.

The very first morning delivers one of the trip highlights: Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen village that has stood above the Ounila River since at least the 17th century and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. From there the route strings together Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley, the Ziz palm groves and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas before the cities of the north.

Because you travel with your own English speaking driver, the loop flexes around you: add a desert camp night, linger in Chefchaouen, or skip Casablanca entirely. Day 1: Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and Dades Valley

An early start takes you over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest road pass in Morocco, with Berber villages clinging to the slopes on both sides. You explore Ait Ben Haddou on foot, pass the film studios of Ouarzazate, then follow the Skoura oasis and the Valley of Roses into the Dades Valley. Around 6 to 7 hours of driving, broken by plenty of stops. Overnight in Dades Valley.

Day 2: Dades Valley to Todra Gorge and Merzouga

Morning light on the Dades rock formations is spectacular, so we do not rush. After a walk between the sheer walls of Todra Gorge you continue through Berber villages and the fossil town of Erfoud to Merzouga, where the Erg Chebbi dunes rise straight out of the plain. Optional camel trek, quad ride or a night in a luxury desert camp. Overnight in Merzouga or your desert camp.

Day 3: Merzouga to the Ziz Valley, Ifrane and Fes

Leaving the Sahara, the road climbs through the palm packed Ziz Valley and the apple country around Midelt, then into the Middle Atlas cedar forest where Barbary macaques often wait by the roadside. A stop in tidy, alpine style Ifrane breaks the drive before you reach Fes in the evening. Overnight in Fes.

Day 4: A full day exploring Fes

Fes el-Bali is the largest car free urban area in the world, and today it is yours. With an optional local guide you visit the Chouara tanneries, Bou Inania Madrasa, the gates of the Royal Palace, the Mellah and the area around Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859 and among the oldest universities anywhere. Overnight in Fes.

Day 5: Fes to Chefchaouen

A scenic half day drive through the Rif Mountains delivers you to Chefchaouen by early afternoon, leaving hours of daylight for the blue washed lanes, the kasbah on the main square and the viewpoint walk to the Spanish Mosque at sunset. Overnight in Chefchaouen.

Day 6: Chefchaouen to Rabat

Today you descend from the Rif to the Atlantic and reach Rabat, the calm, green capital. Visit the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Andalusian gardens and the blue and white Kasbah of the Udayas above the river mouth. Overnight in Rabat.

Day 7: Rabat to Casablanca and back to Marrakech

A short coastal hop brings you to Casablanca for the Hassan II Mosque, whose minaret rises 210 metres above the ocean, and a stroll on the Corniche. The modern highway then returns you to Marrakech by evening. Overnight in Marrakech.

Day 8: Departure from Marrakech

Depending on your flight, enjoy a final morning in the souks or a quiet breakfast before your driver takes you to Marrakech Menara Airport or any address you choose. End of your 8 day loop of Morocco.

How many kilometres does this 8 day loop cover?

Roughly 1,600 kilometres over eight days. The two longest legs are day 1 over the Atlas and day 3 from the desert to Fes, each around 6 to 7 hours with stops. Every other day is 4 hours of driving or less, and the vehicle is exclusively yours so you rest whenever you like.

Is the desert camp night included?

The camel trek and camp are optional and arranged on request, because travellers have very different tastes and budgets, from simple Berber camps to private luxury tents. We recommend camps we work with year round and add the one you choose to your plan.

Can we do this tour with children?

Yes, families do this loop regularly. The private vehicle means flexible bathroom and snack stops, and days can be reshuffled so children are never in the car past their limit. Child seats are available if you tell us ages in advance.

Do we need to book hotels ourselves?

You can, or we can suggest a shortlist of riads and hotels we trust in each town for your budget and you book directly. Keeping accommodation out of our price means no hidden markup on rooms.

Can this 8 day loop be extended to 10 days?

Easily, and it is the most common change travellers request. The usual upgrades are a second night at the desert so you get a free Sahara day, and a night in Chefchaouen instead of passing through, which turns the two longest days into four comfortable ones.

Which months are best for this circuit?

April, May, October and early November give you warm desert evenings and pleasant city walking on the same trip. Winter works well with a heated camp, and in summer we start desert days early and time Chefchaouen and the coast for the hottest afternoons.
