Morocco is not one climate but three. On the same August afternoon the Atlantic coast sits near 25°C while the Sahara passes 42°C, four hours apart by road. Pick a month below to see what each region actually feels like, how busy the country is, and whether the desert is comfortable.

The three Moroccos
The most useful thing to understand about Moroccan weather is that the country is not one climate but at least three, and they can differ by more than twenty degrees on the same afternoon. In August, Essaouira sits near 25°C while Zagora passes 42°C, a day’s drive apart. A cold Atlantic current keeps the coast mild all summer, the interior bakes, and the High Atlas stays cool enough to need a jacket at night in June. Plan by region, not by country.
The second thing: averages are not the whole story. Marrakech averages 38°C in July, but most summers bring one or two spells where it holds above 45°C for days. Desert nights run the other way, dropping close to freezing in midwinter after a 20°C afternoon. Use the monthly figures to choose a season, then check a live forecast for the week you travel.
Morocco weather by month: quick answers
What is the best month to visit Morocco?
April and October are the strongest all-round months: warm but not punishing inland, comfortable in the desert, pleasant on the coast. They are also the busiest and most expensive. For similar weather with fewer people, try late March, early May, or the second half of September.
What is the best time to visit the Sahara in Morocco?
October to April. Daytime highs at Merzouga sit between roughly 19°C and 30°C in that window. From June to August highs regularly exceed 40°C, which is genuinely dangerous for midday activity. Desert nights in December and January can approach freezing.
How hot does Marrakech actually get in summer?
The July average high is around 38°C, but averages understate it. Most summers bring one or two heatwaves where Marrakech holds above 45°C for several consecutive days, and the record approaches 50°C. In those spells, sightseeing works only early morning and evening.
Is Morocco too hot in July and August?
Inland, often yes. Marrakech averages around 38°C in July and Zagora around 43°C. The Atlantic coast is a different country: Essaouira stays near 24°C to 25°C all summer because of a cold ocean current. A summer trip works well if built around the coast and the mountains rather than the desert and the imperial cities.
When does it rain in Morocco?
Rain falls mainly between November and March and is modest in most of the country. Marrakech averages about 344 mm a year and the Sahara around 63 mm. The north is far wetter: Tangier gets roughly 700 mm and Chefchaouen around 900 mm, which is why the Rif is green.
When is Morocco least crowded?
January and February are the quietest months at the major sites, with cool clear weather that suits the desert and the imperial cities well. November is also quiet. The busiest periods are April, October, Easter week, and the fortnight around Christmas and New Year.
