Day Trips from Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate is where the Atlas Mountains give way to the pre-Saharan landscape. The city is our home base. From here, three different day trips reach a UNESCO kasbah, a gorge cut deep into red rock, and a palm river oasis that stretches south toward the Sahara.
Three Routes, Three Completely Different Landscapes
Each route out of Ouarzazate leads to a different terrain and a different kind of day. One is a half-day option. Two need a full day to do properly. All three are private and priced upfront.
Ait Ben Haddou
The closest trip and one of the most recognised sites in Morocco. A fortified ksar used as a film location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia. Can be done in a half-day, leaving the afternoon free.
Dades Valley
Head northeast along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Ancient earthen towers, Monkey Fingers rock formations, and a gorge that narrows the further you follow the river upstream.
Draa Valley
Morocco’s longest river creates a continuous palm oasis running south from Ouarzazate. The route passes Agdz, Tamnougalt Kasbah and reaches Zagora. A landscape that looks nothing like the rest of Morocco.
A Base Most Travellers Underestimate
Most visitors pass through Ouarzazate on the way to the Sahara. Those who stay a night or two discover it is one of the best bases for day trips in the south. Roads are good, traffic is light, and all three routes leave the city in a different direction so there is no overlap between them.
We are based here. Our drivers know every kasbah, every tea stop, every viewpoint on these routes. That local knowledge makes a real difference on a day like this.
Common Questions
Is Ouarzazate a good base for day trips?
Yes. The roads out of Ouarzazate are good, traffic is minimal, and the three main directions each lead to a destination worth a full day. We are based here, so these are routes we know inside out.
Can I do Ait Ben Haddou in a half-day?
Yes. It is only 30 km from Ouarzazate and takes about 2 hours to walk through properly. A morning visit followed by a free afternoon is a popular combination, especially for those arriving or leaving Ouarzazate the same day.
Can I do two of these trips on back-to-back days?
Yes, and many guests do exactly that. We can arrange consecutive days with the same driver so you keep continuity. Some guests base themselves in Ouarzazate for 3 nights and cover all three routes at a comfortable pace.
Which trip is best for first-time visitors to southern Morocco?
Ait Ben Haddou is the most iconic and the easiest to fit into a shorter stay. For those with more time, Draa Valley gives the most distinct landscape, one that most tourists miss because it requires heading south rather than east.
Can I bring my pet?
Yes. Pets are welcome on all our trips. Dogs, cats and other animals travel with us regularly. Mention your pet when you book and we will make sure the vehicle is set up for a comfortable journey for everyone.
